Army Sgt Butler was assigned to Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, Fort Riley, Kansas. Butler was killed in As Samawah, when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his vehicle. Jacob and his family moved to Wellsville, Kansas in 1990 where he graduated from Wellsville High School in 1996. He is remembered as a hard working youngster, well liked and respected. After graduation, he worked at several businesses before joining the Army in November of 1998. He was a cavalry scout for two years before re-enlisting on March 23, 2001. As a cavalry scout, he went on tour to Kuwait in 1999 and was later deployed again to Kuwait on his second tour in April 2002 until October of that same year. Once again, Jacob was deployed to Kuwait on March 2, 2003. His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, The Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, The Army Achievement Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with service star, The Good Conduct Medal and The Purple Heart, earned in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Jacob was a kind, care-giving and loving person; he'd give you the shirt off his back. It goes back to the way he was raised, coming from a tight-knit family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising cattle, and loved spending time with his family and friends. Jacob wrote a letter to his parents just two hours before he died, saying ''Remember me. We'll all be together soon.''
