Matilda was the mother of acclaimed poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. She was also the mother of Elizabeth Florence Dunbar who died very young.
Matilda's parents were Willis Burton and Eliza Porter Burton,an enslaved married couple,enslaved on the farm of Squire David Glass in Lexington,Kentucky.

In a previous marriage to Wilson W. Murphy, of Louisville,KY; she had two children, William Murphy and Robert Murphy .She was not quite seventeen when she wed Wilson Murphy.Matilda was a sister to four known sisters and three known brothers. Four siblings are laid to rest in Lexington,Kentucky. Alexander and Ann are buried at the African Cemetery No.2 . Priscilla in Lexington. Ellen Burton, unknown.Younger brother John F.at Cove Haven Cemetery. Robert M.and Rebecca were laid to rest in Dayton,Ohio at the Woodlawn Cemetery.
Matilda had a special close bond with her son Paul until the day he died.
She died at 89 years of age at her home at 219 N. Summit St. Dayton,Ohio.The home is now an Ohio and National Historical Site.
