Dixieland Band was bred and raced by Mary Sharp, wife to Bayard Sharp, a prominent and widely respected Delaware businessman. The colt won the 1983 Pennsylvania Derby and the 1984 Massachusetts Handicap.

He was retired to stud at Kentucky's Lane's End Farm where he became one of eight sons of the great Northern Dancer to sire more than 100 stakes winners. Through his daughters, Dixieland Band was the 2004 North American Champion broodmare sire. He was the damsire of Kentucky Derby winners Monarchos (2001) and Street Sense (2007).
