Switch Engine Hits Pickup Boisean Killed
HEYBURN - AP - Delbert Eugene Baker, 29, of 2113 Owyhee street, Boise, jumped from a pickup truck into the path of a Union Pacific switch engine and was killed Tuesday morning. A passenger who sat tight emerged from the smashed truck with minor injuries.
Bud Lay, 31, of Heybum received bruises and a minor cut in the crash at a Heybum crossing.
As the truck approached the crossing, Lay said Baker saw the engine, and said, "Jump, we're going to get hit." He leaped from the cab, but Lay didn't have time, Baker's body was carried 262 feet, and the demolished truck another 316 feet.
Homer Christensen, 50, Pocatello, was the engineer, and Edward Simnitt, Minidoka, fireman on the engine.
Mr. Baker was born June 7, 1925, at Southwest City, Mo. He was a veteran of World war II.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Harvina Baker of Boise; three children, Delbert Eugene, Jr., Betty Jean and Florence Irene Baker, all at home; his mother, Mrs. Edna Baker of Pineville, Mo.; four brothers, Udell Baker of Pineville, Mo.; Junior Baker of Rocky Comfort, Mo., Delmar Baker of Pierce, Idaho, and Willie Baker, of Anderson, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Norman of Odessa, Texas, and Mrs. Betty Schlessman of Anderson, Mo.
Relyea chapel of Boise is arranging services.

BAKER - Services for Delbert Eugene Baker will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Relyea chapel with interment in the Field of Honor at Morris Hill.
