Artemisia Iowa Fortner was the 8th child of Joseph W. Fortner and Mary Susan Ayers Fortner. Her sibilings were: Eliza Kate Fortner; Sarah Ellen Fortner; Martha Ann Fortner; Harriet Francis Fortner; Mary E. Fortner; Emma J. Fortner; William Franklin Forther; Robert Lemuel Fortner and Richard Benjamin Fortner.

She married Reuben Daugherty in 1891 after the death of his first wife, Laura Josephine Howell Daugherty. She and Reuben had one child: Caroline "Carrie" L. Daugherty (McNalley).
