Ciaran (pronounced KEER-ron) was adopted from the Bergen County Animal Shelter, Teterboro, NJ early November 2012. Described in a local paper as a "large and mellow" senior who "likes to be petted and brushed", I decided to take a chance on him. He was quite chubby even after being confined in a cage for a few months. The circumstances of how he came to be a homeless cat were not known. He was extremely friendly, took to me right away and easily adjusted to his new home. I learned a lot about him when I began to prepare my first meal with him in the house. The sound of cookware really got his attention as he waddled into the kitchen with a joyful countenance induced by the familiar sound of pots and pans and, without a doubt, the anticipation of table food. I think he must have been loved and spoiled to the max. He probably belonged to an elderly person who either passed away or was sent to a nursing home. If the latter, I could only hope that person was memory-challenged and not in a state of despair about the fate of the cat.
Sadly, Ciaran's companionship was to be measured only in months, not in years. When it became clear Ciaran was rapidly losing his battle with lymphoma, the awful decision was made with great anguish. He departed this life on February 28, 2014. Fifteen short months is all we had together, ten of those months were happy and good for him before he began to transition. As I write this, he's been gone nearly nine months and my heart still aches for him. I loved him as much as the five cats who concurrently graced my life for more than a decade. So now, my boy, you will forever have a place in my heart with the likes of Blondie, Romeo, Tsunami, Kiwi and Wiley, kindred feline spirits who, in life, would have welcomed you into their fold. Into that very same fold shall you forever rest.
