Artist. He was a prolific Swedish artist, who was born in a poor family in the slums of Stockholm, yet became one of the top Swedish artists. He is definitely one of Sweden's most beloved painters, and reproductions of his art can be found in many thousands of homes, in Sweden and elsewhere. He had no assets, but he had talent, and with the help from a local teacher, he enrolled at thirteen years old into the Academy of Arts in Stockholm. As a young painter, he went to Paris and began his career as an illustrator for different magazines and books, with little success. The Paris Salons rejected exhibiting his work. His turning point was when he met his future wife Karin Bergöö at the Swedish artist colony in Gerz outside Paris. Together they formed an aesthetic partnership. They returned to Sweden, settling in Sundborn, near Falun in the province of Dalarna. Leaving oil paintings, he produced watercolors, and she designed the furnishings of their home. Eight children were born to the couple. Using his children as models, much of his art describes the family, and the life in Sundborn. His many paintings include oils, watercolors, and frescoes. Today their home. "Carl Larssongården" (The Carl Larsson Estate) is a museum. In 1997 the Victoria & Albert Museum in London held a successful exhibition showing their art and home with designs and decorations. As of 1997 Carl Larsson's last monumental work, "Midvinterblot" (Midwinter Sacrifice) is displayed at the National Museum in Stockholm, but was originally rejected when he was living. His memoirs were published posthumously.
