Marriage
To Ila Kathleen Kirkruff

Retired Los Angeles Fire Battalion Chief, Sam Paul Salvadore Crisa, was a beloved son of Vincent Crisa and Mary Rose Calvarusso. He married Ila Kathleen Kirkruff on 10 Aug 1951 at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in San Pedro, California. Ila was a daughter of Linnie Kroeger Kirkruff Sischo who is laid to rest in this cemetery.

Sam was appointed fire chief on Dec. 19, 1955; Service Pension August 3, 1986. In 1996 he was diagnosed with Waldenstrom's disease, a rare form of lymphoma.

Quoted in the Wall Street Journal in 2004, Sam said,
"Despite standard chemotherapy, my condition was rapidly worsening and I required blood transfusions every three weeks." Crisa was concerned about his very survival. "My daughter learned of the chemosensitivity assays that Dr. Nagourney performs from one of her associates who had one done himself," he says. In the assay, Dr. Nagourney identified several drugs likely to help control Crisa's disease. Fortunately, a simple combination of two-drugs looked the best. "Thanks to the assay, I was able to take a mild combination of chemotherapies and never felt sick. After just three treatments in 1996, my cancer went into remission and I have never required additional therapy. November will mark eight years since diagnosis," Crisa added.

Sam passed away one year later on 26 Sept 2005 at Torrance, California. Funeral Services were held at Green Hills Memorial Park on Oct. 1, 2005, followed by interment at Green Hills Memorial Park.

Note
Sam's quotes appeared in "Pioneer Physician in 'Custom Chemo' Discusses Utility & Clinical Application of Sensitivity Assays; September 14, 2004, Wall Street Journal.
(It may be of mild interest that this memorial's manager is a distant cousin of Dr. Waldenstrom who discovered Waldenstrom's Disease.)
