That was certainly Tom Koulax's philosophy when he founded "Tommy's Original World Famous Hamburgers" in May 1946 in a little hot dog shack at the corner of Beverly and Rampart Boulevards, near downtown Los Angeles. Original Tommy's is world famous for its chili and chili burgers. Today there are thirty-four locations in California & Nevada, and a mobile "Shack on Wheels" for special events.
Born in Oklahoma City to Greek immigrant parents, Nick and Katherine, Tommy Koulax came to Southern California in 1928. Before becoming a short order cook he worked as a welder.
Builder of the beloved hamburger chain that bears his name, Tommy died 46 years after serving his first hamburger smothered in his personalized chili.
He was 73 and died at his home in Rolling Hills Estates of cancer.
Tommy Koulax was survived by his wife, Esther, and six children.
