AMBER
Joe Amber, 66, 105 Francis St., died Thursday in his home. Services are pending with Denton Funeral Home.
Denton officials said services will probably be delayed until Tuesday pending arrival of family members, many of whom attended another family funeral in Iowa this week.
Born in Lovilia, Iowa, where he grew up, he joined the Army Air Corps while still in high school, earning his diploma in the service.
He served as a tail gunner on B-17's and B-24's and flew combat missions out of London during World War II. Earning combat medals, he served in the European arena.
After discharge from the Army in 1945, he returned to Iowa where he worked in the coal mines before moving to Odessa, Texas, and Anchorage, Alaska, and then back to Odessa.
He came to Carlsbad in 1952. He retired as a mine foreman from Duval Corp. in 1976.
Amber was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Odessa, the Kwaba Shrine Temple in Davenport, Iowa, and the Carlsbad Elks and Moose lodges.
He is survived by five brothers, William and Max, both of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Eugene, Sylacauga, Ala., Fred, Bullhead City, Ariz., and James of Harvey, Iowa; and one sister, Betty Jane Harbaugh, Clay City, Ind.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Transportation Fund, Kwaba Shrine Temple, in care of Denton Funeral Home.

A service for Joe Amber, 66, 105 W. Francis St., is to be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Denton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brent Haworth, First Christian Church, officiating.
Amber died at his home Oct. 1.
A Masonic graveside service is to be held in Carlsbad Cemetery. The Lodge of Sorrows will convene at the Masonic Hall at 1:15 p.m.
The United Veterans Memorial Association will present military honors at the graveside.
Pallbearers include G.M. Barron, Frank Hickman, Paul Duskey, Steve Kostiha, Vernon Cassels and Frank Mensik.
