Charles "Charlie" Newton, 65, of Canyon died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, in Amarillo.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. today in Brooks Chapel with Terry Callis, pastor, of First Assembly of God officiating. Burial will be at Dreamland Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon, 1702 Fifth Ave.

Charles "Charlie" Newton was born Sept. 25, 1941, to Maud Browning and Jessie Norman Newton in Charleston, Miss. He moved to Canyon in 1958 from Greenwood, Miss. Charles married Jaunita Ellis on Aug. 30, 1963, in Canyon. He worked for the city of Canyon for 38 years before retiring as superintendent of Public Works in 1998. He was a member of the Canyon Volunteer Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Newton, and sister, Myrtle Russell.

Survivors include his wife Jaunita Newton; a son, Thomas Newton and his wife April of Canyon; a sister, Linda Thrasher and husband Charlie of Amarillo; two grandchildren, Chelcie and Brice Bonham; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family suggests memorials be to the Canyon Volunteer Fire Department Scholarship Program; Attn: Mike Kelley, 301 16th St., Canyon, TX 79015; or The Humane Society; 3501 S. Osage St., Amarillo, TX 79013.
