Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 154th New York Volunteer Infantry, and led the unit in its heroic but devastating stand against Confederate forces on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1, 1863). At the time of his death he was the last surviving commander of a Union regiment at Gettysburg.
