Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company A, 143rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on August 26, 1862 in Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He served until he died of smallpox in a hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 1, 1864.

On July 29, 1864 his wife, Elizabeth Alden, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension (Application #59336, Certificate #42917).
