John Anderson and Martha Humes were married by the Rev. Andrew Mainship Sept 3rd 1855 at Phila. PA. They had nine children. William, Mary Elizabeth, Isabella, Martha, John, Jane, Martha(2nd), David, and Thomas. At age 16 worked at Thomas Woods Machine Shop, corner of 22nd and Wood St in Phila., for three years to learn his trade and was not bound. Left for Boston for work but could not get full pay. He then consented to work on a Whaler bound for the Arctic ocean found that he did not like this trade. After arriving back in port he stowed himself away on a Merchant ship which was bound for home. He arrived back home and got his job back at Woods Machine shop. John Anderson joined the U.S. Navy in the Civil War. He was on the USS Canonicus (monitor class ship). He was present at the engagement and capture of Fort Fisher, evacuation of Charlston, and the search for the Confederate Ram Ship, Stonewall near Havana, Cuba.
