She was most probably the Johanna Greenslade baptized at St.Sidwell Parish, Exeter, Devonshire, England on Feb 4,1621/2, the daughter of Thomas Greenslade and Johan Baker Greenslade, though this is not conclusive. Her parents are not found in New England records, even though she married James Avery in Massachusetts.

Children: Hannah Avery Minor, James Avery Jr, Mary Avery Minor, Thomas Avery, John Avery, Rebecca Avery Potts, Jonathan Avery, Christopher Avery, and Samuel Avery.

Joanna (Greenslade) Avery's exact date of death is unknown. On 8 October 1697, Manassah Minor recorded in his diary that "Capt Avarys wife was bvryed". -- The Avery Family, 2004. p.27 by Maureen A Taylor (Newbury Street Press).
