The 1900 census revealed Harry was a day laborer and they owned their home. They were living in Buffalo Township, Rockbridge County, Virginia. Harry was born in March 1876 and Sallie was born in March 1870. They had been married seven years, had three children and three still living. Household members: Harry L. Carter (24), Sallie A. (30), Jacob W. (6), Nora R. (3) and Effie L. (2). Harry's parents lived next door. His brothers: John R. & George and families lived a couple houses on the other side.

The 1910 census revealed Harry was a fireman at the Saw Mill. They had eight children and eight were still living. They owned their farm free of mortgage. They were all born in Virginia. Household members: Lewis H. Carter (37), Sallie A. (41), Jacob W. (16), Nellie R. (13), Effie L. (11), Bessie L. (10), Sadie C. (8), Sallie (6), David C. (4) and Harry (2). His brother, Charles and family lived two houses away. Sallie's parents lived about twelve houses away.

The 1920 census revealed Harry was a farmer and worked on his own account. Household members: H.L. Carter (47), Sally (48), Bessie L. (17), David H.(14), Nancy (9) and Maggie (6). His brother, Charles and family lived two houses away. His brother, George B. and family lived next door on the other side.

The 1930 census revealed William was a laborer, their farm was valued at $700 and they had no radio. They were twenty and twenty-two when they married. Household members: Harry L. Carter (57), Sally A. (59), Bessie L. (25), Nancie (18) and Margaret (16).

The 1940 census revealed they lived on County Road 644 as in 1935. They both had a forth grade education. Household members: Harry L. Carter (68) and Sally (67).

{{HARRY LOUIS CARTER - Harry Louis Carter died at his home on Sugar Creek Tuesday, August 27, at 11:30 am with a heart attach. He was born February 8, 1872 in Rockbridge County, a son of W. L. Carter and Elizabeth Potter Carter was a member of the Second Morman Church of Collierstown. Funeral services were held at the church, Thursday, August 29, at 2 pm with interment in the Collierstown Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sally Potter Carter and the following children: Miss Bessie Carter and Mrs. Margaret Fix of Lexington; Mrs. Effie Moore of Natural Bridge, Mrs. Nellie Mays and Mr. Taft Carter of Covington; David Carter, Falling Springs, Mrs. Nancy Shinault, Mrs. Sallie Parrish and Mrs. Sadie Trent of Richmond; also one brother, Charlie Carter of Lexington.}}

Harry lived to age 68.
