Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. From 1846 to 1848, he served as an officer in the Regular Army and saw action in the Mexican War. When his home state of Georgia seceded from the Union at the outbreak of the Civil War, he was made Colonel of the 11th Georgia Infantry Regiment. In command of the 11th Georgia, he lead the regiment in the fighting at the Manassas and Antietam Campaigns. In November 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General and commanded a Brigade in General John Hood's Division at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Chickamauga and Knoxville. By mid-1864, he had led his Brigade in the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor, before surrendering his corps to Union forces at Appomattox in 1865. After the war, he was a freight agent police chief and a Alabama State Tax Collector.
