Major League Baseball Player. Mike Gazella was a hard as nails utility man with the Yankees in the 1920's. He appeared in eight games in 1923 and was sent back to the minors, staying there for two years. He returned to New York in 1926, just in time to be a part of three straight pennant winners. Gazella was known for his temper. When he was only voted a half share of the World Series money in 1926, he went to Commissioner Kennsaw Mountain Landis to appeal. Landis agreed and he got a full share. He also one time went ballistic on his teammates at a team dinner when he felt that they were not playing up to their capabilities. After he left the Yankees after the 1928 season he played in the minors for several seasons and later scouted for his old team. At the time of his death at the age of 82 in 1978, he was the second oldest living member of the famed 1927 Yankees. He died in an auto accident in Odessa, Texas when his pickup truck was involved in a head-on collision.
