Businessman. During World War I, he was appointed to the office of Alien Property Custodian by President Woodrow Wilson. In that capacity, he confiscated a number of German patents, which he then sold to the Chemical Foundation, a company which he managed as President. The following presidential administration investigated his dealings and a months-long trial cleared him of any wrongdoing. He received honorary degrees from Yale, Fordham, Trinity, and Notre Dame Universities. In 1929 he received the Priestley Medal from the American Chemical Society. As a philanthropist, he subsidized the American Chemical Association and the National Research Council, and donated to Yale thousands of American paintings, prints, silver, pewter, furniture, and other items of the Mabel B. Garvan Collection.
