**Great Grandfather**

We called him "Big Daddy". In his younger years, he was a preacher.

When he was older, he lived in a house by the flood wall and he grew a garden where tomatoes grew as big as a man's fist. They lined the railings on his porches all summer long and he would give you all you could eat of them.

He had a ready laugh and loved to tease us kids.

I went to see him when he was in the hospital, they'd told us that it wouldn't be long, he was dying and I wanted to say my good-byes. I leaned over his bed to kiss his cheek and he woke up. I smiled and said hello and he chuckled. He said, "Don't look so sad honey, I ain't dead yet..." He passed away a few hours later.

He was preceeded in death by his wife, Mary Smith Garland.

Their children are Wilma, Earl, George, Shirley, Verda Junior, Juel, and Raymond.

He passed away from cancer.
