Zed Decker was a barber in the Kansas City, Kansas, area for more than 48 years. At age 19 on October 29, 1902, while being hoisted out of the Missouri Zinc Field Mine near Webb City in Jasper County, Missouri, his right leg was crushed so badly between the bucket and the cribbing that it had to be amputated just below the knee. Soon thereafter, he met and eventually married Mae Elizabeth Allen Decker in Springfield, Missouri, in August 1904. After the deaths of their two infant sons near Dogwood in Douglas County, Missouri, and the birth of their second daughter, they eventually moved to and became long-time residents of Kansas City, Kansas. They lived at 1233 Wood Avenue for over 40 years. His son, Kenneth DeWayne Decker, followed his father into the profession. Mr. Decker owned barber shops at 13th and Yecker and 13th and Wood Avenues in Kansas City, Kansas, for many years. He was the son of Zachary Taylor Decker and Anna Elizabeth Owen Hall Decker. He was also the father of Zora Edna Decker Allen Reynolds Heckart, George "Georgie" Decker, Milo Harold Decker and Anna Hilda Decker Engleman Sumerwell. He was the grandfather of Dorothy Jeanne Allen Lytch.

He was the adopted brother of Ada Belle Merriott Decker DeNota.
