Zachary Taylor Decker was the son of Benjamin G. Decker, Sr., and Louisa Caroline Knowles Jackson Decker, the latter of whom is interred at Nebraska City, Otoe Co., NE. In early 1865, he enlisted, aged 15, in the United States Army at Fort Leavenworth, KS. He served in Hunt's Independent Battery, later Company M of the 16th Kansas Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War. He and his wife, Anna Elizabeth Owen Hall Decker, who preceded him in death, lived their last years in the Soldiers' Home at Ft. Dodge, Ford County, Kansas. Both died there.

He was an early member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Community of Christ). He was baptized in 1866 and was an ordained priest. He was later ordained an Elder. He was a farmer, miner, and laborer. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic Post No. 190 in Webb City, Jasper County, Missouri. He is the father of Zachariah Erastus Decker and the adopted father of Ada Belle Merriott Decker DeNota.
