Roman Catholic Saint. House of Wessex. Born at Kent, England, the illegitimate daughter of Eadgar, King of England and the nun, Wulfrith whom he was said to have abducted and seduced. When her mother was allowed to return to her abbey, she took Edith with her, and she was raised in Wilton Abbey. In her early teens she took her vows and also became a nun there. Her father was said to have offered her three abbacies, but she remained at Wilton serving as abbess there. She was said to have refused all royal honors and secular power, but was reputed to have dressed royally nonetheless. She had built a church at Wilton, dedicated to Saint Denis. She died shortly after its dedication at about age 23. She is listed on the calendar of saints as Edith of Wilton, but she has also been called Eadgyth or Ediva.
