WARREN S. BUCK
---A stone mason. He enlisted in the Civil War when about sixteen years old. He said that when they were preparing for a battle, the men had hidden themselves as well as they could but an officer came up and said, "Men, I don't want you to fight like that." The officer took a rifle, stood erect, and showed them how he expected them to fight. He said, "The Rebels are coming and I am calling you to attention and I want you all to stand up and fight like men." Warren said that rifle was the heaviest load he ever lifted when he went to stand up.
---Warren liked to play tricks. At the burial of a soldier, orders were that everything must be quiet. There were a lot of colored men around, and among them a very large colored man. Warren got behind him and thought he would snap; the cap on his gun, which he did; but the gun was loaded, which he did not know, and it discharged. An officer ordered him taken to the guard house and hung up by the thumbs for two hours, then rest two hours and hung up again. When he entered the guard house a card game was on so he asked to join them, which he did, and they played until four o'clock when the Officer of the Day came in, and the Corporal of the Guard said, "Well, Buck, it is time to hang again." The Officer said, "Let that man go. He has had enough." The fact was that he had not hung at all.
---He tells of another trick. He was guarding a lot of colored men who were prisoners, in an old building which was surrounded heavily by thorn bushes. Warren told them they were all to be shot, but if he knew they would never tell, he would let them out. They promised him everything. He opened the door and started shooting. He said that was a pitiful sight, seeing these men running through these thorn bushes.
