JESS PATTON, JR.
---Tragedy struck again the Jess Patton family Saturday, when Jess Patton, Jr., their 25 year old son, was killed by asphyxiation as he slept in a Larrymore, Kansas tourist cabin. The news came as the family awaited the arrival of the body of another son, Airman second class Robert Patton, who was accidentally killed November 2 on duty with the armed forces in the Philippine Islands.
---Young Patton and a companion were enroute to his home in Joplin when they stopped at the cabin in Kansas. During the night the gas stove went out and both men were asphyxiated. The body was returned to La Plata and the funeral services will be held this afternoon (Wednesday) at 2:00 at the Methodist Church. Rev. J. Truman Quigley will officiate.
---Patton, a distinguished veteran of the Korean war, was born April 4, 1928. He attended grade school at Prairie Bird and graduated from the Brashear High School. In August of 1950 he entered the army and spent 14 months on the front lines in Korea. He was the recipient of the Combat Infantryman's badge, the Korean Combat Medal, The Silver Star with Four Oak Clusters and the highest award given by the government, the Congressional Medal of Honor at a special ceremony at Joplin.
---Survivors include his wife, Nancy Ruth of Joplin; one son, Gary, of Kirksville; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Patton of La Plata and five brothers, Russell and Wayne of Joplin, Seymour of Eureka, California, Lonnie, who is returning to the States from Korea, and Deane of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Freda Cupp and Mrs. Lois Steele, both of Paris, Missouri and Mrs. Betty Baker of Kirksville.
