Funeral services for Weslie Newton Wellborn, 57, of LaPlata, will be held at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon (April 10, 1990) in the Pollock Funeral Chapel, LaPlata. The Rev. Rodney DeGroot, pastor of the LaPlata Christian Church, will conduct the services. Music will be provided by Shirley Matticks, organist, and Glenda Campbell, soloist. Selections will be, “Beyond the Sunset” and “In the Garden.” Burial will be in the LaPlata Cemetery.
Mr. Wellborn died at 12:45 Saturday morning (April 7, 1990) in the Veterans Hospital, Columbia, where he had been a patient since April 5. He had been in failing health since February.
Born March 21, 1933 in Kirksville, he was the son of Chester and Norma Smith Wellborn. On April 24, 1954 in Macon, he married Evelyn Calef who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jeffery Wellborn of Shawnee, Kansas and Gene Wellborn of Kansas City; five daughters, Mrs. Rick (Norma) Scott of LaPlata, Mrs. Richard (Nanette) Blackstad of Kirksville, Mrs. Larry (Susan) Olson of Kirksville, Mrs. David (Sheila) Flickinger of LaPlata and Paula Booth of LaPlata; ten grandchildren; three brothers, Leslie Wellborn of Macon, Earl Wellborn of Salisbury and Jimmy Wellborn of Cresco, Iowa; one sister, Betty Gore of Kansas City and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sons.
Mr. Wellborn spent most of his life in the Kirksville-LaPlata area. He attended Kirksville Public Schools. He was employed as an automobile and insurance salesman. For the past four years, he was a truck driver for the North American Transport, American Central Transport and Robert’s Express Companies.
In 1950, Mr. Wellborn enlisted in the United States Air Force and served until 1953.
He was a member of the Southside Baptist Church, Kirksville.
Bearers will be Phil Hinson, Wayne Reiser, Charles Lewellyn, Dewayne Wellborn, Gary Knotts and Harold Smith.
