Jan passed away on October 11, 2013 following a lengthy battle with breast cancer. She was the younger of two daughters born to William Albert Gibbs and Lemma Lee Otwell. She received her undergraduate degree in Art from the University of Alabama and a graduate degree in Speech Pathology from Columbia University. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Michael G. Thorstad and four children: Erik; Elissa and her husband, Doug; Michael; Matthew and his wife, Bronka; two grandchildren: Tyler and Colin; a sister, Sarah Joyce Gibbs Johnson; two nieces; six grand nieces; a grand nephew; six aunts; two uncles; and numerous cousins. She was predeceased in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, William Alvin Johnson. Jan was a past Regent of the Palm Beach Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and attended the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, FL.
