Robert J. Byrne, a former St. Louisan and World War II fighter ace, died Saturday (April 10, 1993) at a nursing home near his home in suburban Philadelphia after a short illness. He was 76.

Mr. Byrne moved to the Philadelphia area after his discharge from the Army Air Forces in World War II, and worked there for the Empire Brush Co. until he retired.

Mr. Byrne reached the rank of captain in the Army Air Forces. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Flying Cross and the Purple Heart for his actions while flying over North Africa during the war.

A native of St. Louis, Mr. Byrne attended Our Lady of Lourdes School in University City and was a graduate of Beaumont High School in St. Louis. After high school, and before enlisting in the service, he played as an outfielder on the baseball Cardinals' farm team in Ashland, Ky. The team played in the Mountain State League.

His father, Robert Byrne Sr., played third base for the Cardinals from 1907 to 1909.
