United States Air Force General, US Senator. U.S. pilot in WWII. Shot down over Holland while dropping paratroops. Spent 42 days eluding capture. Awarded Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross, Presidential Citation, and French Croix de Guerre. Retired from U.S. Air Force Reserve as Major General. Elected to U.S. Senate in 1958 and served four terms.
