He was the son of James and Rose (nee Mesch) Cameron. He is survived by his wife, Muriel Caroline (nee Cochrane); his children, George Jr.; Janet Hamilton and Nancy Sloan; 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

George joined the US Army in 1942, at the age of 20. He was assigned to the Eighth Army Air Force with the 91st Bomb Group's 324th Bombardment Squadron, which operated out of R.A.F. Bassingbourn, England.

George received the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the FAME with three Bronze Stars for his service as a ball turret gunner in the B-17 bomber nicknamed the "Pist'l Packin' Mama", surviving 26 missions over Nazi-occupied Europe. (In the photo, George is standing, on the far left.)

In September 2011, Geroge received the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal, the state's highest honor, from US Senator Robert Menendez.

After the war, George returned to Jersey City (NJ) and worked as a laborer before becoming a bus driver for Public Service Coordinated Transport for 20 years. He also worked for a Ford Motor company affiliate in Saddle Brook, NJ for more than 10 years before retiring.

He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 75 and Post 75 for 10 years. He was also an honorary member of the Mid-Atlantic Branch of Scottish Clan Cameron of North America.
