Sgt. Carlie M. Lee, III, known as "Nicky", of Bayview, Alabama. He was home schooled and two weeks after his 2006 graduation, he joined the Army. He completed basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and came to Fort Drum NY in August of 2006. He had previously deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from October 2006 to May 2007 and was currently assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry). His unit deployed to Afghanistan in early 2009. Nicky had only recently undergone surgery on his appendix and had not been out of the hospital for more than two weeks when he went back into combat. He died at Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his patrol was attacked by enemy forces using small-arms fire in Chak, Afghanistan. Nicky had re-enlisted last December for another 5 years of military service, his country and his family meant the world to him. He would have been home in July from his tour of duty. His awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Combat Service, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver - Wheeled Vehicles and posthumous awards of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a graduate of the Combat Life Savers Course. He is survived by his parents, Carlie Mattison Lee II and Norma Jean (Patterson) Lee; brother, Jus-In-Tyme Lee; sisters, Jett and Spring; nephew, Ethan Logan; niece, Scarlet; aunts, uncle and many other family and friends.
