Marine Sgt Hoskins was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii. He died while supporting combat operations when his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb. Jay graduated in May 2003 from North Lamar High School in Paris, Texas. While in school he was active in youth baseman and football and was named All Red River Valley as a tight end and linebacker. After graduation, he joined the Marines and deployed to Iraq in 2004 where he fought in the Battle of Fallujah. He later deployed in 2005 to the Tora Bora area of the Afghanistan mountains, receiving the first of his Afghanistan Campaign medals. He received three combat action ribbons, three sea service deployment ribbons, an Iraqi Campaign medal, a Navy Marine Corps Achievement medal, a National Defense Service medal, a Global War on Terror Service medal, a Good Conduct medal and now a Purple Heart, along with other pending medals as well as rifle and pistol expert badges. He was also a Marine mixed martial arts black belt instructor. Jay was a devoted Christian and a loving family man to his wife, Chandler, and young son. A second child is due in January. When Jay came home to Paris for the last time, thousands of people lined the streets to pay their respects. His family and friends were overwhelmed by the town and how it turned out to honor him. Many people held flags which they dipped in a sign of respect as the hearse carrying Jay passed by.
