The Schweigert family and most families of Ozora spoke German even if the family was several generations American.
When Dora first started school, very little English was spoken. The teacher spoke very little German. This would change with the United States entering the World War. America's enemy would be Germany so naturally the German language was virtually outlawed in many parts of the country.
Years later, in the 1980's, Dora could speak fluent German to friends from Germany.
Growing up, Dora hated house work, cooking and baking. She much preferred to do "boy" chores, like milking cows, feeding hogs, or field work.
Somehow Dora got over this not so small hurdle and would grow to enjoy it, making many delicious German recipes such as huetzel brot and liver dumplings.
Later in Dora's teens, she moved to St. Louis where she did domestic work and cooking for two wealthy families, the Cassett's and the Kandell's. She would later move back home so she could court her future husband Byron Lurk.
Dora Married Byron (Bud) Lurk on October 20, 1931 at Ozora, MO and they ran a dairy farm with Byron's brother Tom. In 1941 Bud and Dora bought the Joe Trautman Farm near Bloomsdale, Missouri.
In 1948, after not having electricity for eight years, electric power was finally wired to the homes in the area. No longer would the family have to use kerosene and carbide lamps. For Dora, that meant no more kick-starting the Maytag washing machine engine anymore as it was replaced with an electric motor.
In 1959 Bud and Dora semi retired from farming and moved to Bloomsdale, Missouri. Dora worked at the Parkway Cafe across the highway from where they lived. Dora retired in 1975.
Dora and her husband Byron Lurk had four children.
1. Richard Lee Lurk
2. Barbara J (Lurk) Palmer (Nov 20, 1934 - Apr 16, 1985)
3. Royce L. Lurk (Dec 7, 1935 - Jan 23, 1995)
4. Lester Paul Lurk
Buried with Byron and Dora is their great-granddaughter Angela Marie Basler (Aug 3, 1995 - Aug 3, 1995), who died in childbirth.
