Joseph Burget was born in March 1843 in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He married Clara Trautman on February 8, 1875, in Ste Genevieve County, Missouri. They had 10 children in 18 years. He died on June 17, 1918, at the age of 76.

Joseph Burgert, Sr., who was injured by the Illinois Southern Railroad, Tuesday of last week, died from the effects Monday afternoon June 17, 1918, at the Southern Hotel in this city, at the age of 75 years, 3 months and 16 days. He is survived by four daughters, Mary. Mrs. Paul Abt, Annie, Mrs. Henry Roussin, Veronica, Mrs. A. F. Waldmann and Miss Theresa Burgert. The funeral was held
from the residence of Mrs. Gustave Burgert to the Catholic Church Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock and after a Requiem Mass the remains were laid to rest in Valle Spring Cemetery.
