August was the first of five sons born to Gallus and Gertrude (Wipfler) Lurk in St. Genevieve, Missouri. He married Lena on October 17, 1901.

August and Magdalena Elizabeth "Lena" Winston Lurk married on Oct 17, 1901.

August and Lena worked on construction of the Missouri and Illinois (M&I) railroad that ran from St. Geneveive to Bonne Terre, Missouri. August drove a team of mules and a dirt scoop to build Rough Creek Bridge, located just west of Winegarden, Missouri. Lena cooked the meals for the construction crew. Their home was a tent.

Lena and August had eight children:
1. Oscar (Dec 27, 1902 - Jan 14, 1950)
2. Byron (Dec 9, 1904 - Feb 22, 1980)
3. Gertrude (Feb 10, 1907 - Sep 9, 1988)
4. Thomas (Oct 25, 1909 - Mar 5, 1973)
5. Henry (Apr 15, 1912 - Nov 9, 1966)
6. Thecla (Jan 10, 1915 - ?
7. Regina (Jan 3, 1917 - Oct 23, 1992)
8. Ethel (Jan 26, 1919 - Oct 16, 1965)

They later bought and worked various farms until 1937 when August was struck by lightning while farming a field.
He was unconscious for nine hours yet survived the accident. The effects of the lightning strike made it difficult to farm so August bought and sold real estate until his death in 1950.
