Lena married August Lurk on October 17, 1901.
August and Lena worked on construction of the Missouri and Illinois (M&I) railroad that ran from St. Geneveive to Bonne Terre, Missouri. August drove a team of mules and a dirt scoop to build Rough Creek Bridge, located just west of Winegarden, Missouri. Lena cooked the meals for the construction crew. Their home was a tent. Oscar's birthday shows that Lena was pregnent with Oscar during this time.
Lena and August had eight children:
1. Oscar (Dec 27, 1902 - Jan 14, 1950)
2. Byron (Dec 9, 1904 - Feb 22, 1980)
3. Gertrude (Feb 10, 1907 - Sep 9, 1988)
4. Thomas (Oct 25, 1909 - Mar 5, 1973)
5. Henry (Apr 15, 1912 - Nov 9, 1966)
6. Thecla (Jan 10, 1915 - ?
7. Regina (Jan 3, 1917 - Oct 23, 1992)
8. Ethel (Jan 26, 1919 - Oct 16, 1965)
They later bought and worked various farms until 1937 when August was struck by lightning while farming a field.
