Archpriest Emeritus Monsignor Salv Borg.

Gozo News: It is with great sadness, but with very fond memories of a wonderful human being, that we publish the sad news of the passing away of Archpriest Emeritus Monsignor Salv Borg.

St George's Basilica has announced that Monsignor Borg died at St Luke's Hospital in Malta, surrounded by his dearest family and friends. Mgr Borg, a cherished priest of St George's Basilica, has been in hospital for the last three weeks undergoing tests and explorative surgery for an initially unidentified illness.

Mgr Salv Borg was born in Victoria, Gozo. He was ordained priest in 1968 by the then Apostolic Administrator for Gozo HL Mgr Nikol J. Cauchi and celebrated his first solemn Mass of thanksgiving at St George's basilica where, 18 years later, he would be installed second archpriest of the Collegiate Chapter and parish priest of the proto-parish and arch-matrix of Gozo. Pope John Paul II created him His Prelate of Honour. The whole parish will be mourning the death of one of its greatest shepherds. May his soul rest in peace.

A Solemn Funerary Mass for the repose of the soul of Mgr Salv Borg was held with the Bishop of Gozo, Mgr Mario Grech, presiding with the Collegiate Chapter. Mgr Joseph Farrugia, his immediate successor in the town parish, flanked by Can. Joseph A. Borg and Hon. Can. George J. Frendo, accompanied the casket and then gave the final blessing at the state cemetery dedicated to Santa Maria Addolorata on the outskirts of Victoria.

A Cortege, with the participation of the Collegiate Chapter, will leave from Republic Street. The La Stella Band will accompany a cortege which will follow the Mass.
