John Peter was his father's only son, and on April 1, 1792 he bought his father's entire tract of 479 acres. John and his wife Anna Maria had nine children, Henry, Peter, Joseph, Charles, Daniel, Polly (Mary), Elizabeth and Solome. Two of the children, Peter and Daniel, moved to Indiana.
His wife Anna Maria died in 1798, and he married, for his second wife in 1798, Charlotta Guth.
He appears in the 1800 census as "Peter Burkhalter, Jr."
