James C. Deane was born in 1831 in Maryland. He was a farmer before joinging the Confederate Army in Lynchburg Virgina. He was a Captain in the 59th Regt., Virginia Inf. CSA. After the war was over, he married Rhoda Pettyjohn of Virginia. They had eight children. The Deane's moved to Alachua County, Florida. James continued to farm for some years. Paul C. Dean was the oldest child in the family and it was he who married Elva Place, the daughter of Daniel S. Place. James died in 1896 in Waldo, Alachua County, Florida and is buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery.
