"Walter L. Foster 1914-2003

Walt Foster of Benson, died May 10, 2003 in Sierra Vista at the age of 88. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on July 20, 1914 to Walter Foster and Anna S. LaForge.

Walt accomplished a lot of things in his lifetime. He was a Justice of Peace in Oswego, Ill.; he was in the U.S. Army for 28 years, spending 25 years with the Military Police Corps specializing in Criminal Investigation and Crime Prevention. He served in World War II and the Korean War. He was the Warden for Schoefield Barracks while in Hawaii.

He attended Purdue University and the University of Maryland majoring in Criminal Law. In 1964, he retired from the military as a 1st Lieutenant and moved to Arizona. He was in the lumberyard business for many years, also owning several retail businesses in Willcox. He helped build the Sunizona Baptist Church.

He was active in various civic organizations serving as Post Commander of the VFW, Lions Club, and the American Legion. He helped organize the Holos Lions Club and the Willcox Community Food Bank. He worked for the Desert Museum, and volunteered working for the Pima County Sheriff's Dept. He loved to joke around seeing people smile. He also loved to sing at church, and he was a choir director for many years.

His wife Riyo of 52 years; five children, JoAnn Shride, Karla Huechel, Wesley, Stephen and Debbie Woodley survive him. Two sisters, Eleanor Cochran and Dorothy Luepke; and nineteen grandchildren also survive him. His parents; brother Sam; sister, Gracie Edgin; and son Dwight preceded him in death.

Graveside service will be Saturday, May 24, at Benson High Street Cemetery at 10 a.m."
