"We knew this is one of the things we wanted to do, to apply today's technology," said Cpl. Thomas McAndrew, a state police detective who took over the case two years ago.
Though the victim was estimated to have been dead less than 24 hours, police had few solid leads, and the case grew cold.

"Investigators say they have solved a 44-year-old cold case homicide in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, and charged a New York City man in the death.
Female remains discovered in 1976 along the Lehigh River have been identified 44 years later as those of 15-year-old Evelyn Colon, of Jersey City, New Jersey, Pennsylvania State Police announced Wednesday.
Police said they have charged 63-year-old Luis Sierra, of Ozone Park in Queens, with homicide in Evelyn's death.
Sierra is in custody and awaiting extradition to Carbon County, police said.
State police were called Dec. 20, 1976, to investigate human remains found on the riverbank in East Side Borough, Carbon County. The investigation revealed two separate human remains, one being female and the other being a nearly full-term fetus, according to police.
The remains were found in three suitcases beneath an Interstate 80 overpass.
Evelyn's death has long been ruled a homicide, and investigators for years have been asking for the public's help in identifying the remains.
Until the remains were identified 44 years later, the female victim was referred to as "Beth Doe."
"Numerous interviews and investigational processes were conducted following her identification which led to the development of a suspect," state police said in a news release on the case labeled "Criminal Homicide -- N03-27244."
State police, in consultation with the Carbon County District Attorney's Office, said additional information would be released "in the near future."
District Attorney Michael S. Greek declined additional comment Wednesday.
The district court in Weatherly, Pennsylvania, where the charges against Sierra are filed, said no further information would be released until the arrest warrant is served."
