My maternal grandmother.

Bessie Gladys Smith Wood was born on Thursday, January 26, 1905 in Mansfield, Arkansas to James Monroe Smith and Mary Jane Powell.

She had four siblings: Ernest Earl Smith, Eria Bell Smith Bobbitt, Loye Dorothy Smith Murphy and Zerita Aldena Smith Benthall.

Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Wright Smith and Julia Ann Cantrell and her maternal grandparents were Robert Thomas Powell and Margaret S. Baker.

She married Dallas Franklin Wood on Wednesday, December 24, 1919 in Henderson, Rusk County, Texas. They were blessed with four children: Ethel Retha Wood Barber, Helen Francis Wood Deel, Ruby Florence "Tootsie" Wood Boswell DeBruhl and Dallas Eugene "Bill" Wood.

She died on May 3, 1981 in Hearne, Robertson County, Texas. She was 76 years old.

My grandmother, Mama Bessie, was one of the sweetest persons that you would ever hope to meet. She was a Godly woman who loved the Lord with all of her heart. She composed several gospel songs on the piano.

I have such wonderful childhood memories of my Mama Bessie and Granddaddy. There was a railroad track across from their house when they lived on the Old Tyler highway in Jacksonville, Texas. When my brother David and I would hear a train coming we would run out to the highway and wave at the engineers and they would blow their whistle for us.

Mama Bessie's all time favorite television show was "Lassie".

I found this poem written by my grandmother tucked away in a Bible.

Poem by Bessie Gladys Smith Wood

When I awake in the morning
Feeling bad and blue,
I look up to Jesus and say a prayer or two.

I feel it helps me to pray the whole day through
I couldn't make the day if it weren't for Jesus helping me to.

He gives me the inner strength I need when things go wrong
So I just pray all day long.

I am thankful to Jesus for his wonderful blessings and love
All perfect gifts come from above.

I am living for Jesus from day to day
I want to make heaven someday.
