Mary Jane Powell was born on Tuesday, February 7, 1882 in Greenwood, Arkansas to Robert Thomas Powell and Margaret S. Baker.

She had nine siblings: Andrew Jackson Powell, Louvenia Powell Frizzell, Lucy Mae Powell Johnson, Emily Powell Marshall, Archie Monroe Powell, John Lee Powell, Jesse Thomas Powell, Bertha Viola Powell Turner Cotner and Cordie Teelie Powell Smith.

On August 9, 1900, she married James Monroe Smith in Scott County, Arkansas. They were blessed with five children: Ernest Earl Smith, Eria Bell Smith Bobbitt, Bessie Gladys Smith Wood, Loye Dorothy Smith Murphy and Zerita Aldena Smith Benthall.

She died in Houston, Harris County, Texas on Friday, December 31, 1965. She was 83 years old.
