He married Sarah Frances Bacon on June 26, 1849 in Rutherford County, Tennessee. They were blessed with with eight children: Octavanas A. Brookshire Haynes, Esther Ann Brookshire Deel, Robert L. Brookshire, Sarah Graves Brookshire Sheffield, Martha Jim Brookshire Hardin, William Brookshire, Florence Emaline "Galley" Brookshire Deel, and Graves James Brookshire.
He was a Methodist minister.
He died in 1869 in McNairy County, Tennessee.
