JOHN E. PACE, AGED FATHER OF PEOPLE, SUCCUMBS

Dixie Pioneer Dies at Home in St. George Day Before Thanksgiving.

John E. Pace, 87, father of W. B. Pace and Mrs. Henry E. Petersen of Richfield, died at his home in St. George Wednesday, November 23, following a brief illness from pneumonia.

Last summer at Fish Lake Mr. Pace attended the largest reunion of the Pace family ever held, and was in excellent health. He was exceedingly young in spirit and active for his years.

Mr. Pace was born July 12, 1845, at Nauvoo, Illinois, a son of James and Lucinda Streetland Pace, and came to Utah with his parents when a small boy. He was among the first pioneers to Dixie, settling in Washington about 1861.

He married three wives: Caroline Augusta Ivins in the endowment house in Salt Lake, June 29, 1874; Phoebe Ann Covington on December 7, 1877, this being the first marriage in the St. George L. D. S. temple, and to Julia Ann Ivins in August, 1888, in the Salt Lake L. D. S. temple. All preceded him in death.

He filled a three year mission to England and Scotland and was a member of the bishopric in St. George for 35 years. He was watchman at the St. George L. D. S. temple for ten years.

Surviving sons and daughters are: Mrs. George Lytle, John W., John I., Israel W., Walter C. and LaPrele Pace, St. George; Dr. R J. Pace, Los Angeles; Mrs. W. I. Sanders, San Bernardino, California; Mrs. Rulon Dally, Cedar City; Andrew G. Pace, Vallejo, California; W. B. Pace and Mrs. H. E. Petersen, Richfield; Karl I. Pace and Mrs. A. J. Graham, Salt Lake; Sid W. Pace, Alamo, Nevada; Frank Pace, Caliente, Nevada, and Mrs. Sherman Lamb, Cedar City; three half sisters, Mrs. Dixie Blackburn, Salt Lake; Mrs. Louisa Morrell, Loa, and Mrs. Lucinda Redd, Monticello; a half brother, Jeff Pace, Delta; 63 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Andrew Sorensen of St. George is the only full sister surviving.

Those attending the funeral from Richfield were Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Pace, Vern Pace, Mrs. Frank Pace and Mrs. Heber Magleby of Monroe.
