Son of John Carothers & Elspeth "Betsey" Beatty Carothers. In 1797 he married Betsey Sickles in Phelps, New York, settling on a farm in the north part of Phelps. There they raised 11 children. They moved to Burton, Geauga, Ohio in 1834. His youngest daughter, not being married helped take care of him during illness. John died of Consumption in 1842.
