Daughter of Abraham William Sickles (Adopted Name). Family Stories say that Abraham & his wife are from the Oneida Tribe. In 1797 she married John Carothers in Phelps, New York. They settled on a farm in the north part of Phelps. There they raised 11 children. They moved to Burton, Geauga, Ohio in 1834. Her husband died of consumption in 1842. Betsey went blind as she got older, also becoming an invalid and was taken care of by her youngest daughter Maria. Betsey died in September of 1853, 11 years after her husband.
