His obituary claims he was born in Highspire, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, but his death certificate says Lancaster County. The son of German-born Frederick & Lancaster County-born Mary (Balmer) Sides, in 1860 he was a laborer living Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin.

His available online military records are unusually incomplete, but it can be pieced together. The definitive history lies in his compiled military service records, but they will not be available until the post covid-19 reopening of the National Archives.

He enlisted in Middletown April 18, 1861, mustered into federal service at Washington DC July 27 as a private with Co. G, 6th Pennsylvania Reserves (35th Pennsylvania Infantry), and promoted to corporal, date as yet unknown. His obituaries claim he was wounded in the left ankle at the battle of Antietam on September 16 or 17, 1862, but that remains unconfirmed. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer December 22, 1863, at Nokesville, Loudon County, Virginia. On May 31, 1864, with the dissolution of the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps, he transferred to Co. H, 191st Pennsylvania Infantry, to complete his term of service. At muster-out, he was hospitalized for reasons as yet unknown and honorably discharged at Washington DC to date June 13, 1965.

He married Cordelia or Cordilla Parthemore and fathered George Elmer (b. 03/06/68), Warren E. (b. @1870), Frances Y. (b. @1873), Milton Omer (b. 08/12/78), Mary Emma (b. 01/09/81 - married William John Morgan), and Flora May (b. 04/30/76 - married Charles Houseman). He married twice more - the third being Elizabeth lnu. - but details are lacking. His obituary mentions a daughter Mrs. Devinney living in New Jersey, who may have been Frances. He died in Harrisburg City Hospital from "myocarditis and arteriosclerosis."
