The son of James & Eliza (McFadden) Crawford, in 1860 he was living with his farming family in Granville Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Lewistown, Mifflin County, August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 7 as a private with Co. K, 131st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 23, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the still overstated age of eighteen and mustered into federal service at Mount Union, Mifflin County, July 1, 1863, as a private with Co. D in the six-month organization of the 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa), and honorably discharged with his company January 6, 1864.

He married Mary Jennifer Earnest allegedly ca. 1873 (1877 also reported) and fathered James William (b. 12/23/68), Lydia E. (b. 06/27/72), John C. (b. @1873), Andrew Jackson (b. 02/25/74), Jacob Albert (b. 05/27/75), Jennie M. (b. 02/??/79), and Joseph Elmer (b. 01/15/82). By 1900, he was living in Swatara Township, Dauphin County, and died in Highspire from "tuberculosis of lungs." His death certificate claims a birth date of February 6, 1847.
