The son of John & Henrietta "Harriet" (Kohr) Toomey, in 1850 he was living with his family in Conewago Township, York County, Pennsylvania, but in 1860 was a farmer living in neighboring Newberry Township. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Newberry Township August 29, 1861, and mustered into federal service at York September 14 s a corporal with Co. B, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was captured at the battle of Carter's Woods (Stephenson's Depot) north of Winchester, Virginia, on June 15, 1863, and incarcerated on Belle Isle in Richmond, Virginia. Following parole, he was forwarded to Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland, where he deserted in the company of several hundred comrades. He returned on his own and rejoined the regiment October 20, 1863, then re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 1, 1864, at Brandy Station, Virginia. Captured again near Petersburg, Virginia, on June 23, 1864, he was ultimately incarcerated in the stockade at Andersonville, Georgia, where he languished until October 31 when he was transferred with most of the prison camp to a prison facility in Millen. Paroled at Savannah, Georgia, November 19, 1864 , the army granted him the thirty-day furlough standard with all released long term prisoners-of-war with the goal of returning him to duty. His health denied that possibility, and he discharged by surgeon's certificate to date May 16, 1865.
After the war, he married Anna Strine and fathered Missouri (b. 04/18/66), Adaline U. (b. 08/??/71 - married Samuel F. Shuey), Margaret (b. @1874, d. 07/24/81), Lucy K. (b. 12/19/74 - married Patrick Conley and Daniel Allen Bingaman), Henrietta Salome (b. 02/12/78 - married Benjamin Franklin Gutschall), and Nora (b. 1878 [?]). In 1890, he was living in Highspire, Dauphin County, but died in Selinsgrove at what may be the age of 68-2-10, although his tombstone is hard to read in the low resolution photo seen here. No obituary was found in any online newspaper archive.
